Personal reflection
In my music video, FWA boss by SL. I did really well on the editing aspects: transitions, shot speeds and lip-syncing. This took a lot of time editing in Imovie. Putting slow-mo on the establishing shots and tediously trying to match sound with the movement of my lips and points of transition. Furthermore, I believe the mise-en-scene in the first 30 seconds of my video really fit the codes and conventions of a typical drill video. I achieved this by meticulously planning what to shoot at night and getting the perfect camera movement and angles for that. However, after this the video lost its dark and grungy edge as I was in a bright, sunny, school setting for a majority of my lip syncing. Furthermore, I think my quality of planning on my story board helped me achieve the movement, transitions and angles I wanted. This gave the music video a more professional look. I managed to describe what I wanted from each scene and deliver that whether it was a fade to black transition or a camera pan to the left.
In contrary to this, I needed to consider where I shoot my video- especially lip-syncing. As well as this I must improve on the quality of my planning and take more careful consideration on what font I use. I think I should’ve put more quantity of work in my story board as a lot of the shots I took were just made up on the spot from when I was out, this is down to the fact that my story board wasn’t detailed enough and didn’t give much perception on what I should shoot although the editorial comments were very helpful. My storyboard should've also contained a detailed storyline not one of me just lip-syncing, this would've made the video much more exciting and intriguing to the viewer. In addition to this I need to take into consideration the location and quantity of shots I have. This is because the mise-en-scene during the lip-syncing section of my video was in huge contrast to the intro and didn’t fit the codes and conventions of the genre of music. Furthermore, I need to have more shots as a lot of my lip-syncing in front of the car looked terrible and was pretty much unusable. As well as this I need to pick a better font to represent the codes and conventions of my chosen music genre. The font looked as though ‘it was from a preschool’. In the future I must think harder about what font to use, as I believe the one from this video should have been a sharp-cornered, graffiti font.
Feedback from peers
The feedback I received from my classmates varied a lot but was extremely useful, most of the feedback if not all, credited my sharp transitions and the mise-en-scene of the opening establishing shots. However, I got mixed feedback on the lip-syncing, a vast majority said it was done well whereas others said in places it was a bit out of time- I think this applies to the end of the video. Finally, I received a lot of negative feedback on the mis-en-scene of my video. People wanted to see more of a night-time aesthetic and more shots in front of the car, rather than them all being at school, I completely agree with this, and next time will make the effort to go out and film in the perfect conditions to fit the mise-en-scene.
